Personalized Sherpa Shacket from Marleylilly

Hey, loves! This time of year, there is one winter essential style that we simply can’t live without: sherpa!

Sherpa is amazingly soft and insulating. Because of this, it is one of the best-selling items at Marleylilly. Sherpa clothing, such as our Monogrammed Sherpa Shacket, Monogrammed Sherpa Hoodie and our Monogrammed Leopard Sherpa Jacket, is always a welcome gift that’s perfect for the holiday season (especially when they’re monogrammed!). Along with clothing, our cozy Monogrammed Sherpa Tie Booties are another cold weather must-have.

There is just one downside: this cozy winter fabric can be prone to matting and pilling.

If you don’t take proper care of your sherpa item, it can start looking a little worse for the wear. To keep you warm and looking cute all winter long, we’ve put together a how-to tutorial that includes the best way to properly clean and care for your favorite sherpa clothing, how to wash your sherpa blanket and how to care for your sherpa accessories so you can enjoy them for many years to come!

How to Wash a Sherpa Blanket and Sherpa Clothing
step-by-step instructions for how to wash and clean sherpa material

First, let’s just say that you probably don’t need to wash your sherpa as often as you might think. Unless you’re getting it super dirty with each use, washing it once every four weeks or so should do the trick just fine.

When machine washing your sherpa blanket or clothes, set your washer on a low temperature or cold water setting. It’s also wise to put your washing machine on a delicate and gentle cycle. Use mild laundry detergent (fragrance-free, dye-free) only. Never use fabric softeners or bleach!

Also, do not wash your sherpa items with other clothes. This care suggestion may seem like a hassle, but it will keep them looking pristine. It will also prevent those dreaded fuzzies from getting all over your other clothes.

Treating a Stain

One of the great things about sherpa fleece is that it wicks away moisture and responds well to spot treatments. If you get a stain on your favorite sherpa pullover or jacket, simply rub a mild detergent, white vinegar, or dish soap into the stain and then hand wash it with cool water.

Have a tougher stain, such as paint? You can use odorless mineral spirits as a last resort. Mineral spirits can be found at your local grocery store or at stores like Home Depot.

Drying Your Sherpa Pullover

Once your sherpa fleece blanket or clothing item has been through a wash cycle, hang it up to dry. Although some will opt to throw it into the dryer on a low, tumble-dry setting, your best bet is to let it air dry instead. The care instructions should be very clear that you want to avoid exposing it to high heat or hot water whenever possible.

Sometimes you’ll notice dents in your sherpa fabric. There’s an easy fix! To prevent dents in your sherpa, use a hanger to air dry it. Hang it up in a warm, dry place where it can dry undisturbed for a few hours. After it is dry, fluff it with your hands. Voila! It should look good as new.

How to Fix Matting and Pilling

All right. You now know how to clean and care for brand-new sherpa clothes and sherpa blankets. But what about those existing sherpa faves that are looking a little tired, worn and sad? Is the money you spent on those favorite wintertime essentials down the drain?

If your sherpa looks a little worse for the wear with matting and pilling, don’t toss it aside just yet! There is a DIY way to restore it to its former, fluffy glory.

To fix a matted sherpa pullover, blanket or other clothing item, you’ll need a boar bristle brush or a pet slicker brush. You could possibly get away with a plastic hairbrush as well, but the other two brushes will work best.

Next, you will lay your sherpa out on a flat surface and then brush the matted area in many different directions. This will help get the matted parts out easier. You can then take a lint roller over the garment to remove the excess lint that is trapped in the fur.

If that doesn’t take care of it, then mix a little hair conditioner and warm water in a spray bottle. Spray a little of this gentle detergent onto the matted areas, and then try to gently brush it out.

Snuggle Up in Your Cozy Sherpa

Whether you need some extra warmth while doing a little holiday shopping or you want to cozy up in something while lounging around the house, sherpa fabric is that must-have essential for the winter. To keep your items looking and feeling soft and cozy all winter long, this special fabric does need a little TLC every now and again; however, that TLC goes a long way.
